People often say it gives them a more stable, focused type of energy without the jitters. So how do they actually compare when it comes to focus and sustained energy?

A typical 8-ounce cup of coffee contains about 80–100 mg of caffeine, while matcha generally provides about 40–70 mg per serving, depending on the matcha powder blend.

As most people have probably experienced, coffee tends to deliver a strong and fast spike of caffeine and energy (faster than that of matcha). Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain, which wakes you up and also increases dopamine and norepinephrine activity - key drivers of wakefulness and attention.

However, more caffeine doesn’t necessarily mean better focus. Higher doses are also more likely to increase jitteriness, anxiety, and the “crash” that can follow once caffeine levels drop.

With matcha, you get the caffeine, but other compounds, which can influence the experience.  Because matcha is made from finely ground whole tea leaves, you consume the entire leaf rather than an infusion, which means you’re also getting a higher dose of compounds like L-theanine and catechins alongside the caffeine. Some research suggests that this combination may slow the rate at which caffeine is absorbed and metabolized, which may lead to a more gradual rise in alertness compared to coffee. This often translates to a steadier, more sustained energy curve rather than a rapid spike.

The role of L-Theanine in matcha

What sets matcha apart from coffee is that it naturally contains L-theanine, an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea plants.

L-theanine is a calming amino acid that can help counteract the less desirable side effects of caffeine. It’s been shown to promote activity in GABA pathways (associated with calmness) and increase alpha brain wave activity. When paired with caffeine, it can help you feel relaxed yet alert. One randomized controlled study found that caffeine paired with L-theanine improved attention and task-switching performance compared to a placebo group.

Coffee typically gives you a faster rise in energy that peaks within 30–60 minutes and may taper off within a few hours. Leading many people to grab a second, or third, cup of coffee. 

Matcha tends to be a bit more gradual. Because L-theanine slows the stimulant effect, many people experience a longer, steadier boost that lasts around 3–5 hours.

Caffeine alone can increase physiological markers of stress, including heart rate and feelings of anxiety, especially at higher doses or in people sensitive to it. 

L-theanine appears to counterbalance some of that. Research suggests it can reduce stress responses and promote a calmer mental state without sedation.

This is one reason why matcha is often associated with “calm focus,” whereas coffee can feel more stimulating.
