Matcha affogato recipe

What is an affogato?

An affogato is a classic Italian dessert traditionally made with vanilla ice cream and a shot of espresso. The word affogato actually translates to “drowned” in Italian, referring to the hot espresso that is poured over and “drowns” the cold ice cream. While this is a classic dessert for a reason, we’re all about bucking tradition—in the most delicious way possible.

Why choose matcha?

A matcha affogato is a refreshing way to reimagine this classic dessert. Using matcha powder instead of espresso can be perfect for those who prefer a gentler caffeine option (especially in the evening) or who simply don’t enjoy the taste of coffee.

Matcha provides a calm energy boost thanks to its l-theanine content, which promotes a calm, relaxed feeling. Its earthy, umami flavor complements the creamy sweetness of vanilla ice cream without being quite as bold as espresso. Matcha affogato is also visually stunning and makes for a beautiful dessert to impress guests with.

All in all, a matcha affogato is a fresh, flavorful take on a timeless classic.

How to make matcha affogato

Making a matcha affogato is simple and foolproof! Truly a dessert anyone can master.

Make a matcha affogato by following these three easy steps:

First, make your matcha. As a traditional affogato is made using espresso, we want our matcha to be a bit thicker and stronger- similar to what you would get with espresso. Sift 1 tsp of a higher quality matcha tea powder (but it doesn’t need to be your highest quality powder) into a cup or small bowl. Sifting your matcha prevents clumps from forming. Mix with hot but not boiling water. Your water temperature should be about 175 F degrees. Using a chasen (bamboo whisk) or a hand-held milk frother, froth well until your matcha is smooth and creamy and small bubbles form on the surface.

Next, scoop your ice cream into a small bowl.

Lastly, slowly pour the matcha over your ice cream and serve immediately.

What you’ll need

Vanilla Ice Cream: Since this dessert has just a few ingredients, choose a high-quality vanilla ice cream with minimal ingredients and a rich flavor. Look for options with visible vanilla bean specks for the best taste.

Matcha tea powder: Use a matcha blend suitable for drinking, like a ceremonial blend. Its smooth flavor works better in this dessert than culinary-grade matcha, which can be too bitter. Our Daily Ritual Ceremonial matcha powder would be a great option!

Water: Use water heated to 175-180 F. Avoid boiling water, as it can scorch the matcha, creating an unpleasant bitter taste.

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon matcha powder

3 tablespoons hot water

1-2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Optional: Splash of amaretto liqueur

Directions:

  1.   Sift matcha powder into a small glass or bowl. Add hot water and whisk using a bamboo whisk or milk frother until smooth and frothy.
  2.   Optional: Add a small splash of amaretto liqueur to your matcha and froth again.
  3.   Scoop ice cream into a small bowl.
  4.   Pour matcha slowly over ice cream. Enjoy immediately.

Variations:

- Drizzle with white chocolate

- Topped with crushed nuts (like pistachios or almonds), fresh berries, or crumbled cookies

- Use a plant-based ice cream to make it vegan

- Make this a creamier dessert by using milk instead of water with your matcha powder

-  Use one of our flavored matcha powders for a fun twist.

- Sprinkle a bit of extra matcha powder as garnish

- Use a different flavor ice cream, like peppermint or chocolate

Bottom Line: Affogatos aren’t just for espresso

This matcha affogato uses two simple ingredients—matcha and ice cream—to create an indulgent dessert that’s ready in under five minutes. It's perfect for a weeknight treat or a beautiful dessert to serve to guests. This twist on a classic is one we’re sure you’ll love!
