Summer is peak sangria season and this white wine matcha sangria is sure to be your new favorite drink.
The fruit found in this sangria recipe is refreshing and delicious and makes for a perfect pairing when combined with the earthy, umami flavor of your powdered, bright green matcha.
The Benefits of making matcha green tea sangria
So often sangria is packed with sugar that only leaves you with a regret and a headache the next day. We fixed that here. There’s no sugar added to our sangria recipe with all the sweetness coming from fruit, wine and the St. Germain. Adding white wine creates the perfect combo of earthy, citrusy and delectably sweet.
Unlike the more traditional sangria, made with red wine, this variety is light and crip and is perfect for a hot summer evening.

Sangria is as wine-based cocktail that hails from Spain. It was especially popular in the 1700’s (it’s mentioned quite often in Jane Austen novels) but can actually be dated back to 200 B.C. Rome. When Spain was invaded by the Romans, they started to plant grapes and then trade them. Romans enjoyed wine from Spain and named wine-like punches sangria. Although that mixture isn’t quite what we think of today when we drink sangria.
About a century later, sangria became a popular drink in Europe and was typically made with Bordeaux as the base. In 1964 Sangria made its debut in the United States during the World Fair in New York.
The rest is history as they say! Now let's make some skinny matcha sangria. Olé!
Recipe for Skinny Matcha Sangria:
Ingredients you will need:
- 1 cup frozen grapes- some whole, some halved
- 1 cup honeydew melon
- 1 green apple chopped
- 3 limes- 2 sliced, 1 juiced
- 3 sprigs fresh mint
- 3 springs fresh basil
- 2 cups sparkling water
- 2 tbsp matcha
- 1 cup water
- 1 bottle white wine 750 ml (resiling)
- ¾ cup St Germain liqueur
Recipe instructions for skinny matcha sangria:
- In a glass, whisk matcha with cold water until all clumps are dissolved.
- Transfer matcha mixture to a large pitcher and add in the lime juice, lime slices, grapes, apple slices, honeydew melon, and half the mint and basil.
- Pour white wine and St. Germain into pitcher and let chill for at least 1 hour.
- Right before serving, add a handful of ice and the sparkling water.
- Garnish with remaining mint and basil. You can also use other herbs in your garden such as rosemary and even add in some chia seeds for an extra health boost!
- Find somewhere to sit and sip on your refreshing skinny matcha sangria!
Final tips for the recipe
Opt for a sweeter white wine here to balance out the earthy matcha flavor. Freezing the grapes ahead of time is a fun twist and also helps to cool down the sangria faster (meaning you can drink it quicker!). This recipe only takes a few minutes of prep work and is ready in just a few hours.
Honeydew melon is also known for containing necessary electrolytes and can help keep you hydrated will drinking alcohol. I don’t know if we want to say this or not.
