White chocolate: You can use white chocolate chips or a bar. You can also sub for dark chocolate. Microwave in 30-second increments until melted.
Matcha: Culinary-grade matcha works well in this recipe. Sift before using to prevent clumps.
Nut butter: Peanut, almond, or cashew all work well! You can also swap for sunflower seed butter. Look for an unsweetened variety.
Flaky sea salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the flavor of your dates.
Tips and Tricks:
- You can buy pitted dates or pit them yourself by slicing each date in half lengthwise and then removing the pit.
- To smash the dates, use the back of a spoon, the bottom of a glass, or the back of your hand. Smash them until they are as thick as you’d like. If your dates are sticking, try lightly greasing the bottom of a glass or spoon with oil.
- Play around with toppings. Try chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or dried fruit. You can also drizzle each date with dark chocolate or caramel.
- Store smashed dates in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week or in the freezer for three months.
- Use fresh dates for the best flavor!
