What is star of anise?

What is star of anise?

Star of anise is native to China and Vietnam and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It’s used for treating fungal, bacterial, and viral infections and is rich in bioactive compounds like flavonoids and polyphenols. Because of these compounds, star of anise has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits—just like matcha!

What does star of anise taste like?

Star of anise has a licorice-like taste. It’s often described as slightly sweet and spicy with a hint of earthiness.

Star of anise is often described as being similar to cloves, cinnamon, allspice, and fennel seed.

This pairs well with chai tea’s slight spiciness and matcha’s rich umami, slightly vegetal taste.
