What is lychee fruit?

If you’re not so familiar with what exactly lychee is or what it tastes like, we’re delighted to spread the word on this tropical fruit. With its Asian origins, lychees are typically sweet and juicy. It’s small in size (but bigger than grapes!), and needs to be peeled per piece with a solid seed in the center that needs to be carefully removed.

What does lychee taste like? How does lychee pair with matcha?

It has a light tangy and fragrant flavor, making it a popular blend with many fruit teas. Chatime, a famous Taiwanese bubble tea franchise, sells a lychee green tea beverage that’s a best-selling item on their menu.

We have no doubt lychee paired with our vibrant and earthy matcha on ice is definitely the perfect combination of flavors to create a refreshingly balanced drink.

So, let’s get started with this recipe!

Iced Lychee Matcha Refresher Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp matcha
  • 60 ml hot water
  • 6 pcs lychee (fresh lychees are recommended!)
  • 2 tbsp simple syrup

Iced Lychee Matcha Refresher 5-Step Directions:

  1. Blend fresh lychees and strain. Add in simple syrup and mix.
  2. Sift matcha in a tea bowl and add hot water.
  3. Whisk until frothy.
  4. In a glass cup, add the lychee juice or syrup, sparkling water or distilled water, ice, and matcha green tea powder.
  5. Sip, and enjoy!

Note: We definitely recommend using fresh lychees if you can find them in your local grocery or farmer’s market. They give you that super fresh and clean flavor that comes with using any fresh fruit.

Although if you can’t find any, you can still use canned lychees for this recipe, and add in the lychee juice from that instead of simple syrup into the blend. You’ll still get that beautiful well-balanced and refreshing iced lychee matcha drink!

Matcha.com recommendations to use with this lychee recipe:

Since this is a super simple recipe with very few ingredients, it’s crucial to use the best matcha green tea to get that perfect earthy balance. We recommend using our Tenchi Ceremonial Organic Matcha or Superior Organic Matcha.

Either will really give you that unique umami flavor that pairs well with the lychee juice.
