Why we love these:

Quick to make: Prepped in just about five minutes, these smashed dates make for a quick and easy snack or healthy treat.

Versatile: Customize these to your taste preference. Switch up the type of nut butter you’re using, add nuts or seeds, or use dark chocolate instead of white.

Healthy: These are sweetened naturally with dates and just a touch of white chocolate. They are rich in nutrients from the nut butter, dates, and matcha, making them a sustaining and satisfying treat.

Make ahead of time: These are great for meal prepping! Make them ahead of time and keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to munch on them. Take them with you on a hike or as a post-workout snack.

What you’ll need:

Dates: Medjool dates are preferred. Make sure to remove the pits before using them.

White chocolate: You can use white chocolate chips or a bar. You can also sub for dark chocolate. Microwave in 30-second increments until melted.

Matcha: Culinary-grade matcha works well in this recipe. Sift before using to prevent clumps.

Nut butter: Peanut, almond, or cashew all work well! You can also swap for sunflower seed butter. Look for an unsweetened variety.

Flaky sea salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the flavor of your dates.

Tips and Tricks:

  • You can buy pitted dates or pit them yourself by slicing each date in half lengthwise and then removing the pit.
  • To smash the dates, use the back of a spoon, the bottom of a glass, or the back of your hand. Smash them until they are as thick as you’d like. If your dates are sticking, try lightly greasing the bottom of a glass or spoon with oil.
  • Play around with toppings. Try chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or dried fruit. You can also drizzle each date with dark chocolate or caramel.
  • Store smashed dates in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week or in the freezer for three months.
  • Use fresh dates for the best flavor!
