Are you looking for the perfect matcha frosting to top off your cupcakes or layer in your cakes? Well, look no further, because we created the perfect matcha buttercream recipe for you to use in multiple occasions! It’s vibrantly green and lusciously creamy—the perfect matcha buttercream.
What’s the difference between buttercream and frosting?
Whether you’re simply taking up baking as a hobby or are an advanced baker, a lot of people can get confused between buttercream and frosting—even throw icing in the mix. To settle it directly, icing is thinner in consistency. Its main ingredients are powdered sugar and a liquid that makes a sweet and smooth glaze.
Meanwhile, buttercream is a type of frosting that is made with a base of butter, powdered sugar, and sometimes milk or cream. It is heavier and richer than frosting, and is often used as a filling or frosting for cakes and cupcakes that require a more substantial topping.
Buttercream should be stored in the refrigerator and can be frozen for up to three months. Before using frozen buttercream, it should be thawed in the refrigerator and then brought to room temperature before using.
Frosting is a type of dessert topping that is typically made with a base of cream cheese or whipped cream. It is lighter and fluffier than buttercream, and often used as a topping for cakes or cupcakes that do not require a heavy frosting. Unlike buttercream, frosting can be left out at room temperature for a longer period of time without spoiling.
What not to do with matcha buttercream
Since there are very few ingredients used in this recipe, it’s crucial to use right varieties in proper state. Firstly, the unsalted butter used needs to be at room temp, if at any other state, your buttercream may curdle or you just won’t get the consistency you want for the perfect buttercream.
Now for the powdered sugar, make sure to use powdered sugar, and not refined sugar. Again, this will affect the overall consistency of your matcha buttercream. We want the sugar to dissolved and combine completely to get that thick and smooth texture.
Lastly, and most importantly (in our humble opinion), use high quality Japanese matcha from matcha.com! For most of our baked goods, we recommend using our Organic Chef's Choice Culinary Grace Matcha. But you can always experiment with our other ceremonial matcha such as Tenchi Ceremonial Organic or First Harvest Matcha. You can also experiment to elevate your matcha palate with our flavored matchas such as Chocolate Matcha or Matcha Chai.
When you use high quality matcha green tea powder, you also reap from the abundant health benefits that matcha gives you. From an energy and mood boosting superfood to a great source of antioxidants, matcha tastes good and make you feel great too. So make sure to use the right one, and be as generous as you can to get the matcha flavor you want!
