Orange lovers, this one is for you. Made with a homemade black sugar orange simple syrup and earthy matcha, this drink is then topped with whipped cream, orange zest, and nutmeg, resulting in a citrusy, creamy, and delicious treat. Inspired by a drink one of our team members tried in Melbourne, Australia, we wanted to recreate it on our own- but obviously with matcha!
Our take on a Mont Blanc layers rich black sugar syrup infused with fresh orange zest and nutmeg, our smooth and umami-packed Tenchi Organic Matcha, and a soft cloud of spiced cream. We think you’ll love this one!

What is a Mont Blanc?
Mont Blanc (French for “White Mountain”) is a classic European dessert originating from France and Italy. Traditionally made with sweetened chestnut puree piped into noodle-like strands over whipped cream, which is meant to resemble a snow-capped mountain. It’s rich, slightly nutty, and often spiced or flavored with vanilla, rum or citrus.
Our matcha Mont Blanc borrows the idea and luxurious layering of cream and spice. Think of it more like a drinkable nod to the iconic dessert- just modernized with matcha and citrus.
What you’ll need
Black sugar
Also called kokuto in Japan, black sugar has a molasses-like flavor that pairs well with citrus. If you can’t find black sugar, a great substitute is dark brown sugar or muscovado sugar, both of which offer a similar rich, caramelized taste.
Orange (zest + juice)
Orange juice and zest give this drink vibrant citrus notes, adding a bit of brightness. You’ll use both the zest and fresh juice.
Nutmeg
Just a pinch of spice helps to deepen the flavor of the syrup. Ground nutmeg works perfectly here, or you can grate it fresh for an extra fragrant touch.
Matcha powder
Opt for a high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha, such as our Tenchi Organic, which boasts a smooth, umami-rich flavor that stands up well to the strong notes of citrus and spice.
Heavy Cream
For the whipped cream you’ll top your Mont Blanc with. For a dairy-free option, you can use full-fat coconut cream or a thick oat-based whipped cream.
Milk (optional)
For a matcha latte version, use half water and half milk when making your matcha. Use any milk you like- whole, oat, almond, or soy all work, depending on your preferences.

Ingredients:
Black Sugar Orange Syrup:
½ cup black sugar
½ cup water
1 tbsp orange zest
1/8 cup orange juice
¼ tsp nutmeg
Matcha Base:
2 tsp matcha powder
½ cup water (or ¼ cup water + ¼ cup milk for a latte)
1 tbsp black sugar, orange syrup
Cream Top:
¼ cup heavy cream
1 tbsp black sugar, orange syrup
Orange zest + Nutmeg for garnish
Directions:
1. Simmer syrup ingredients for 5-8 minutes. Strain and let cool.
2. Whisk matcha powder with water (add milk for latte style)
3. Froth cream with black orange syrup until fluffy.
4. To make, add ice to a glass. Add syrup mixture, then matcha base, then top with cream mixture. Garnish with orange zest and nutmeg.
Make it yours:
-
Hot or Iced: This drink is delicious both ways. Skip the ice and warm your milk for a cozy version.
-
Add extra flavor: A drop of vanilla extract or a splash of orange liquor gives this even more flavor.
-
Make it vegan: Swap the heavy cream for whipped coconut cream and use a plant-based milk like oat or almond.

Bottom Line:
Mont Blanc drinks are trendy right now - and for good reason - but just wait until you try this version made with matcha powder. It brings together bold matcha, zesty citrus, and rich warming spices in a drink that feels like dessert in a glass. Whether you're chasing Melbourne café vibes or simply want a creative take on your daily matcha, this one's worth the extra step. Give it a try and let us know how you like it!
