What is Genmaicha?
Rather than traditional tea, which is typically made from dried tea leaves, genmaicha is a type of tea made from a mixture of green tea and brown rice. Which makes sense as genmaicha actually translates to “brown rice tea” in Japanese.
Genmaicha is commonly made with a single origin sencha green tea. Sencha is a loose leaf green tea that comes from the plant Camellia sinensis (same plant that matcha green tea and black tea come from). Unlike matcha powder, however, sencha is grown in full sunlight before harvest. The leaves are then steamed, pressed and dried. In order to make sencha tea, you steep the tea leaves in hot water.
