What does matcha taste like?
If you’re new to matcha, you may be wondering what it tastes like and how it works in this recipe. Matcha is a type of green tea that uses the whole tea leaf. The leaves are then ground down into a very fine powder. High quality matcha will have a bright green hue and tastes slightly sweet, earthy and has a rich umami flavor. Bitter matcha is a sign of a low quality tea.
Matcha works well in baking as it balances out the sweetness and enhances the overall flavor of whatever it’s added to. We find it works especially well with any creamy recipes. Hence why are particularly partial to matcha eggnog.

What alcohol is best to use in eggnog?
While you can CERTAINLY enjoy this matcha eggnog without alcohol, eggnog is traditionally served with a touch of booze. Which leads us to which alcohol works best here?
We’d recommend a whiskey or rum, although you can absolutely try vodka as well. You don’t need to whip out top shelf liquor for eggnog, but we do recommend choosing a mid-range liquor as the cheap stuff often has a harsh flavor that cuts through the delicious flavor of the cream and spices.
How to serve your matcha eggnog green tea latte recipe
The choice is yours! Some prefer warm or room temperature eggnog while others like theirs chilled. Here at matcha.com, we personally prefer ours chilled! If reheating the eggnog, just be cautious not to overheat it as matcha can burn easily, which distorts the taste.
If you’ve tried store bought eggnog before and it just wasn’t your thing. Don’t write it off just yet!
