What sets a matcha espresso apart from a regular matcha?

While traditional matcha generally calls for 1-2 tsp of matcha powder and approximately a cup of hot water (adjustable to taste), a matcha espresso calls for only about 2 oz of water. This allows you to drink your matcha quicker and is arguably easier than making a more conventional matcha beverage.

As matcha has gained popularity in the Western hemisphere, so have matcha lattes- which are typically made with milk and some type of sweetener. Given matcha’s renowned earthy, umami flavor profile, a touch of honey or brown sugar can mellow it out. With a matcha espresso, however, you’re getting an unadulterated taste. While you can absolutely add a touch of sweetness if you’d like, a classic espresso shot is traditionally enjoyed as is, ideal for those seeking a bold flavor experience.

Which variety of matcha works best?

Different varieties of matcha

Since you’re getting such a concentrated hit of matcha, we recommend using a premium-grade powder. Our top recommendation is our Premium Ceremonial Master’s Blend, although our Original Ceremonial Blend or Tenchi Ceremonial Organic would work well, too. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference and your preferred blend. Just remember that the flavor of high-quality matcha really makes a difference. So, if there was ever a time to bust out your high-quality matcha, this is it. Higher-quality matcha is smoother, dissolves better, and ensures your drink isn’t overly bitter.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp high-quality matcha powder
  • 2 oz hot water (175-185 F)

Directions:

1. In a cup mix water and matcha together. Froth well, then pour into an espresso cup. Ensure all the foam transfers as well.

Enjoy!

How to make matcha espresso

While this recipe is written to be hot, you can absolutely serve it cold instead. Just keep in mind that ice will dilute the flavor slightly. To make a cold espresso, use chilled water and serve over ice. If you prefer cold espresso, you can also make this ahead of time and store in the fridge.

Does matcha espresso boast a higher caffeine content?

Nope! While matcha does contain caffeine, the caffeine content ultimately hinges on the quantity of matcha powder used. For reference, matcha typically has 19-44 mg of caffeine per gram. This variance is due to brewing methods, freshness, and the specific matcha variety.
